COMPTON, Calif., — True to his word, Compton Unified School District (CUSD) alumnus Salvador Sanchez is on his way to making an impact on the city and school district that molded him into one of California’s newest state attorneys.
The Compton High School Class of 2003 graduate was sworn-in by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kelvin D. Filer, Monday, June 17, at the Compton Courthouse, while his mother, siblings, friends, and teachers watched with pride. Sanchez earned his law degree from the Rutgers School of Law – Newark and also holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Justice Studies from Arizona State University. He is currently a federal state attorney in New Jersey. Now he is looking forward to serving in Los Angeles County, and especially in the city of Compton.
Sanchez, who also attended McKinley and Tibby elementary schools as well as Enterprise Middle School, credits Compton schools for his success. “My next goal is to start making my way back here. I want to help the schools. I would ultimately love to one day run for the school board or city council in Compton,” he said. “I think Compton is already making great strides but there’s still a lot of work to be done. With the new superintendent and the new mayor I can see things are starting to change for the better.” Sanchez added, “Good things do come out of Compton schools. You can see that when you look at people like Judge Filer and myself. I want to be a part of the work that lies ahead, so the same can be said about all of Compton.”
COMPTON, Calif., — Armed with a degree from Rutgers School of Law – Newark and a desire to improve his community, Salvador Sanchez looks forward to making a positive impact on the city of Compton. Sanchez, who graduated from the New Jersey-based law school in May, is the first in his family to complete his college education. A Compton native and son of Enterprise Middle School resource teacher Maria Fraga, he credits Compton Unified and his mother with his current success. He also holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Justice Studies from Arizona State University. Today Sanchez is “studying hard” in preparation for California’s bar exam, which he will take in Los Angeles at the end of the month. A product of McKinley and Tibby elementary schools, Enterprise Middle School, and Compton High School, where he graduated with honors in 2003, Sanchez said he is proud to represent his hometown and CUSD. “If it wasn’t for Compton Unified’s teachers and the college center in my high school, I would have never made it to where I am today,” he said. “Through their help so many doors were opened. At the college center I received assistance in applying for universities. Compton High had teachers who were willing to help me raise my academic skill level and excel in my AP classes.”
